Different types of kitchen materials

I was searching for some good articles talking about the types of kitchen designs and accidentally found this article at http://www.dreamkitchensuk.com/Kitchen-materials.html#.UT8JShxTBNM. I thought it was a good write-up as it tells you about the different types of materials used for kitchen cabinets. The first page mainly talks about the types of wood used such as timber, MDF board and chipboard. The second page (http://www.dreamkitchensuk.com/kitchen-materials-part2.html#.UT8LDBxTBNM) talks about the types of counter tops available i.e. granite, quartz, glass and stainless steel. Although the article isn't lengthy, it gives a good view of the difference on each material.

Some points extracted
  • Even same species of timber could have different variations in grains and colour as every piece of timber is different.
  • Veneer is like the skin of the wood. It is applied to MDF and chipboard and the colour is limited to the availability of timber species.
  • Foils and vinyl are cheaper wood substitutes and foil is a photographic reproduction of timber. Some vinyls are available with shiny gloss finish and coloured gloss finish is the cheapest material used for gloss-finished doors.
  • Granite surface is quite heat and scratch resistant, but beware of diamond rings scratches and acidic juices and gin may stain granite.
  • Stainless steel has even higher heat resistant and needs very minimum care.
  • Quartz has slightly higher durability than granite.
